I think this series can be a book, though I expect the process will be slow.

With starting of Summer, SCBWI Carolina illustrators started the series of #2016ABCsummer.
This is my participation pieces. My intention in this project is, of course, practicing and having fun.
I want to see playing with various medium with new techniques, and typography.

This product has been around for a while, and people adore it.
However, somehow the idea to put this online finally came through my mind today.

This product is super handmade item.

picking the kind of paper (which is stonehenge, not a regular printing paper)
printing (I did not go through any printing company to be able to print on this particular paper)
Box cutting and making ( Yes. I folded the box.)

My vision for ABC Music

This is my vision for ABC Music alphabet chart aiming preschool kids.
It shows musical instruments and some genres.

Although it seems simple, because of all the variations that I added, it became a huge project.
I planned to finish this about two weeks ago, totally terribly underestimating the amount of work.
I am still working, and glad to know these got many interest from Spring Daze and Peakfest for custom combinations.

Now my goal for this project is finishing by the end of May.

ABC Music

Last week I was thinking about doing ABC illustrations, just like many people do.
At first idea was animals, aliens... things that I are kinda typical.

While I was brain storming with delicious cake at Dulce in Durham,
music came to me. Last three days, I came up with 35 ideas for half of alphabets.
Here are some samples and sneak peak.

My plan is putting these at the Cary Spring Daze next weekend and online by next Friday.
Wish me a luck to finish this within the time frame.

Zip Line looks like a page from a book

I have been posting only some snap shots of zip line. It still have a long way to go. But I finally scanned the finished works and made them look like a page from a book.
Please cheer this super slow turtle.

For last few days, I have slipped away from zip line paintings, 

and had some experiments with "Snow  Is No Way"

Originally, I was not thinking about the background, 

then had a second thought. "What about showing Africa?"

Still not sure about having the background or not for the sake of the whole story.

But I like the final one and how it's going.

Working with Art Director - Illustrator Intensive from NJ SCBWI Conference

The Illustrator Intensive that I took was about working with art director. Patti Ann Harris, Executive Art Director from Scholastic, was the presenter for the session. She gave the attendees an assignment; choosing a prompt from three given stories, submitting a sketch, revising and illustrating the final spread based on her feedback.

The intensive was mainly discussing and critiquing each other's illustrations. Patti added helpful tips and advice. Also, she introduced successful board books and novelty books.

Patti's Feedback:

I applaud you for tackling a more conceptual and complicated solution to the spread. The circular layout has a magical quality and suggests an interesting and robust movement. It could, however be made more clear with a few revsions. I would be careful of the area of overlap where the butterfly covers the bunny’s back legs. I think you might want to clarify that area a bit more so that you really get the feeling of the bunny flying through the air being chased by butterflies. The exaggerated length of the arms might be a tad too long. I would play with that length a bit as you develop his hind legs. Have fun going to final art and think about how you want to maintain that sense of movement when you go to color.

Below is my revised and finalized work for the spread.

I kept the circular layout. I cleared the area where a butterfly and the bunny overlap. Flying bunny was not what I meant, so I put the ground. However, I tried to keep the floating feeling and atmosphere. Certainly the length of arms are fixed. 

The thing that I can improve better is the character. Though I tried variations of bunny characters, I still feel this is a bit... too.. white? boring? too innocent? In a way, it is age appropriate for board books.
